Spring is a time for giving free reign to self-awareness and self-expression. This is the time for shaking off the winter blues and taking early morning walks in the fresh spring air. Earth now prepares for her rebirth as the time of celebrating the fresh shoots of green as tender young plants burst forth.  

Foods in this season nurture our liver and gall bladder, considered to be of the Wood element. When these organs are balanced and healthy we have good self assertion, willpower and motivation. During this time we tend to eat less and more quickly, while our body attempts to cleanse the fats and heavy foods of winter. Limit sea salty foods such as soy sauce, miso and sodium rich meats during this time of cleansing the liver and gall bladder.   

Try a cleansing vegetable or fruit fast for a 3 day period. For those who can handle a longer fast, research the “10 Day Master Cleanser” by Dr. Stanley Burroughs. Do this fast on the first warm week of spring to prevent too much coldness in the body. A week long dose of raw onions and garlic also acts as a vermifuge to rid the body of parasites if the fast is too much to do. 

The flavor of spring is sour and is most active in the liver counteracting effects of rich, greasy foods and functioning as a solvent to break down fats and protein. The sour flavor helps in digestion to dissolve minerals for improved assimilation and strengthening the lungs.

Foods:

young carrots, fresh greens sprouts, cereal grasses, zucchini bread

sesame seeds, cauliflower, mushroom

cabbage,  peppers, scallion

plums, wheat, rye

immature wheat, rice, parsley

young beets, fowl

Add pungent cooking herbs like basil, fennel, marjoram, rosemary, caraway, dill, bay leaf for balance. Emphasize raw and sprouted foods to encourage cleansing and cooling of the body.

Prepare foods simply during Spring. Cook for a shorter time but at higher temperatures. If using oil use a quick high-temperature sauté method. When using water, light steaming or minimal simmering are the preferred cooking methods.  

For those who prefer to short cut their cleansing and detoxification considering using colon hydrotherapy to dilute the toxin and parasite concentration of the large intestine. This results in a reduced load on the liver and lymphatic systems allowing all the other eliminative organs of the body to equalize the removal of such toxins with their production rate. There are numerous parasites passed during a colon hydrotherapy session. Some of the more common parasites are: 

Hookworm 

Roundworm 

Fish Tapeworm 

Dog Tapeworm 

Rat and Dwarf Tapeworm 

Beef/Port Tapeworm 

Whipworm 

Cleansing Baths: After doing your initial colon hydrotherapy session you can keep your system clean using:

Sea salt and baking soda bath ~ clears radiation and lymphatic congestion 

Epsom Salts Bath ~ heavy duty cleanser, clears lymphatic congestion, removes heavy metals and radiation 

Apple Cider vinegar bath ~ good for infections, particularly bacterial. Useful for women with vaginal and bladder infections 

Other Aids to Cleansing:

Skin brushing – daily 2 to 3 minutes for the back. 

Salt Glow – eases constipation, swelling, skin conditions and more 

Castor Oil Compress – do 1 to 3 nights before a colonic to increase circulation to the lower abdominal area and soften hardened colon material 

Oriental/acupressure/shiatsu bodywork to stimulate the body’s elimination channels

Lymphatic drainage massage

Be good to your body at this crucial time of the year to ensure good physical, mental and emotional health for the rest of the year.
